Dry ice blasting or commonly know as dry ice cleaning, is a non-abrasive, environmentally sustainable cleaning solution that uses recycled CO2 solid pellets to effectively blast away unwanted contaminants. It is also non-flammable and water free, which means no secondary waste.
The dry ice pellets are accelerated by compressed air at supersonic speeds. The impact of the pellets creates a kinetic energy effect. At -109F/-78.5, the extreme cold creates thermo shock that causes the contaminant to embrittle, helping to break the bonds between the substrate and contaminant. The pellets sublimate upon impact, turning from solid CO2 to a gas. This change causes them to expand by 800%, making hundreds of micro explosions that blast away unwanted contaminants.
Applied correctly, dry ice will not damage any components. All electronics are safe as dry ice is non-conductive and leaves no residue. Extra detail must be used when using dry ice on old, dried out plastics, rubber and any foam interior parts.
